Appointments & Registration
Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We do not offer weekend appointments. New patient consultations should be arranged through your primary eye doctor and with the approval of your primary care physician or as required by your insurance. Mississippi Retina Associates limits our practice to diseases and surgery of the retina, therefore we do not prescribe glasses or contact lenses. Upon your arrival in our office for your scheduled appointment, our friendly staff will update your contact and insurance information. To avoid registration delays, it is important that you have your identification and insurance card with you. In order to establish a medical chart, you will need to fill out New Patient Registration paperwork, which is available for download here. If possible, please print and complete these documents prior to your appointment.

At Mississippi Retina, we want you to have clear expectations of the duration and substance of your appointment. We will do whatever we can to make sure you are provided the highest level of care and attention. Depending on the complexity of your medical need, your first visit with us may require over 2 hours of your time. This is due to all of the necessary services being performed in our offices. Rather than scheduling multiple appointments in various settings, we strive to accomplish as much as possible at your first visit for your convenience. With that being said, results of necessary testing are usually provided to you on the same day. If special diagnostic testing or treatment is necessary, you may need to be in our office for 3 hours or more.
To perform a retinal examination, it is absolutely necessary to dilate your pupils at each and every visit. Because this may blur your vision for up to 6 hours and make your eyes sensitive to light, you should arrange to have someone drive you home. Sunglasses may make you more comfortable during your trip home following your appointment. Disposable sunglasses are available at our office for your convenience.
A technician will initially greet you at your appointment and will note your current medical needs and record a detailed ocular and medical history. Please be aware of the names and contact information of the doctors involved in your eye care, so we may keep them informed about your diagnosis and treatment. You will be asked for a list of your current medications. Your vision and intraocular pressures will be measured, and eye drops will be used to dilate your pupils. (Pupillary dilation requires up to 30 minutes and is done with virtually no pain or discomfort.)
Your physician will then perform a thorough ophthalmologic and vitreoretinal examination. If necessary, additional diagnostic testing will then be completed as well. This may include retinal photography, fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasound, visual field or other necessary testing.
Once your examination and tests are completed, your physician will explain the results to you. The doctor will take all the time necessary to explain your specific issue and outline a course of action. A complete consultation report will be sent to your referring eye doctor and to your medical doctor.
Once you begin treatment, our staff will do absolutely everything to make sure you are comfortable, relaxed and properly prepared for your specific procedure. Treatments and procedures may include injections, laser or operating room surgery.
Laser treatments and injections are performed in our office. It may be necessary to schedule these treatments to be performed at a later date following your consultation visit. If the need for treatment is urgent, laser and injection treatments may often be performed on the same day as your consultation visit. In this case, the time you spend in our office may be much longer than expected.
If operating room surgery is required, it will be scheduled at one of our affiliated hospital facilities. Depending on the nature and urgency, surgery may be done the same day as your consultation, the following day or scheduled at an appropriate time in the future.
Mississippi Retina’s goal is to provide the utmost in assistance and coordination with all of our participating health insurance providers, as well as Medicare. We are happy to file a claim with your insurance at the time of your service. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with billing or insurance-related questions before or after your scheduled appointment.
At Mississippi Retina, we strive to make your visit with us as efficient as possible, but your care is our number one priority and that means that our physicians want to spend extra time with you. Unfortunately, this may occasionally lead to longer wait times for our patients.
We know that your time is valuable, so thank you for understanding the complexities of each person's healthcare and why your appointment may be slightly delayed from time to time. Again, it is our goal to be on time for every appointment, but just in case, we get behind, we appreciate your patience.
