High Blood Pressure Can Leave Signs in the Eyes

When blood pressure remains elevated, retinal blood vessels may narrow or become damaged. In more serious cases, physicians may observe bleeding, swelling, or other vascular changes.
These findings do not replace a medical diagnosis of hypertension, but they can provide additional information about how high blood pressure may be affecting the body.

Certain health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and other cardiovascular risk factors, can increase the likelihood of retinal vascular problems.

Your retina specialist may recommend that you follow up with your primary care physician, endocrinologist, cardiologist, or another specialist depending on the findings.
This collaborative approach helps ensure that the focus is not only on treating what is happening inside the eye, but also on addressing health factors that may be contributing to the problem.
Pay Attention to Changes in Your Vision
While some systemic conditions can affect the retina without causing early symptoms, certain vision changes deserve prompt attention.
Contact an eye care professional if you experience sudden vision loss, new or worsening blurred vision, distorted or wavy vision, a sudden increase in flashes or floaters, dark or missing areas of vision, or a curtain or shadow moving across your field of view.
These symptoms can have many possible causes, but determining the cause promptly can be important for protecting your sight.
