Connecting to Promote Diabetes Awareness and Vision Health
At Mississippi Retina Associates, supporting our community and helping patients protect their vision go hand in hand. On September 26, 2026, our team participated in the 2026 Jackson Walk for Diabetes, joining individuals, families, and community organizations to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact on Mississippians.
Organized by the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, the event took place at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park in Jackson, bringing the community together in support of individuals and families affected by type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Supporting Diabetes Awareness Across Mississippi
The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi is dedicated to supporting Mississippians living with diabetes through education, advocacy, and community programs. Events like the Jackson Walk for Diabetes provide opportunities for families, healthcare professionals, and local organizations to connect while promoting greater awareness of the disease.
Mississippi Retina Associates was proud to participate in this community event, where our team welcomed attendees at an information booth and helped reinforce the importance of understanding how diabetes can affect long-term eye health.
The event also provided an opportunity for our team to connect with members of the community outside the clinical setting and support a cause closely aligned with our practice’s mission.
Understanding the Connection Between Diabetes and Vision Health
Diabetes can affect many aspects of a person’s health, including their eyesight. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
One of the most common diabetes-related eye conditions is diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when diabetes damages retinal blood vessels. Another serious complication, diabetic macular edema, develops when fluid accumulates in the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. Both conditions can threaten vision, sometimes before noticeable symptoms develop.
Regular dilated eye examinations are an important part of diabetes management. Early detection and appropriate treatment can help reduce the risk of significant vision loss.
Bringing Our Commitment to Eye Health Into the Community
As specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, the physicians and staff at Mississippi Retina Associates understand the importance of diabetes education and proactive eye care. Participating in the Jackson Walk for Diabetes allowed our team to support an organization working to improve the lives of Mississippians affected by diabetes while connecting with individuals and families in our community.
We are grateful to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi for organizing an event that brings people together around education, awareness, and support.
