Understanding the Time Behind a Thorough Retina Exam
When you visit a retina specialist, your appointment may look a little different from a routine eye exam. Retina care often involves dilation, specialized imaging and a detailed evaluation of the structures at the back of the eye. These important steps can sometimes make your visit longer than you might expect.

Why Retina Appointments Can Take More Time
A retina appointment often involves several steps. Depending on your needs, your visit may include checking your vision and eye pressure, dilating your pupils, performing retinal imaging or other diagnostic testing, and completing a detailed examination with your retina specialist.
Dilation itself takes time. After eye drops are administered, your pupils need time to fully dilate so your physician can get a clear view of the retina. How quickly this happens can vary from person to person.
Your physician may also determine during the examination that additional imaging, testing or treatment is necessary. As a result, two patients scheduled for similar appointments may require very different amounts of time.
Sometimes the Unexpected Happens
Retinal conditions can be complex, and some require urgent attention. Patients experiencing symptoms of a retinal tear, retinal detachment or another potentially vision-threatening condition may need to be evaluated quickly.
Unexpected findings during a scheduled examination can also require additional testing or treatment. These situations are difficult to predict and may occasionally affect the schedule.
We understand that delays can be frustrating. Our team works to minimize them whenever possible while making sure each patient receives the attention their condition requires.
Your Time Matters to Us

Because every visit is different, we encourage patients to allow additional time in their schedules, particularly for an initial appointment. Bringing your insurance information, medication list and sunglasses for after dilation can also help you arrive prepared.
